An estimated 1.7 million people each year sustain a traumatic brain injury — with those suffered in falls (including sports), car accidents and biking accidents among the leading causes.

  • A brain injury occurs every 18 seconds in the US

  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is more prevalent in the US than breast cancer, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injuries

  • 5.3 million Americans are currently living with disabilities resulting from TBI, and 80,000-90,000 join their ranks each year.
  • Brain injury is the leading cause of death and disability for people between the ages of 15 and 24

  • An estimated 1.7 million people sustain a TBI annually. of them:

  • o 52,000 die
    o 275,000 are hospitalized, and
    o 1.365 million, nearly 80%, are treated and released from an Emergency department.


  • TBI is a contributing factor to a third (30.5%) of all injury-related deaths in the United States.

  • The cost of TBI in the US is estimated to be $60 billion each year
